The Jefferson Memorial Marathon Hike

UPDATE 1/22/10: PARKING PASSES

I turned in the parking pass requests in Thursday 1/21. If you RSVP now please contact Vickie Howser, [masked], 368-6856 to arrange to get your parking pass. If you are doing just the 10 mile hike I think (I'm not sure) you can show up early at the Visitor's Center and get a pass while you wait.

UPDATE 1/17/10:PLEASE READ. SEVERAL CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE

**********ALL**********

  • CHECK THIS SITE FRIDAY NIGHT... IF THE FORECAST IS FOR STEADY RAIN WE WILL RESCHEDULE
  • Update your RSVP to include the following: your car color and model as well as how many will be riding with you so I can get your parking passes for the Horine section. IF YOU DON'T LIST YOUR CAR COLOR AND MODEL YOU WON'T GET A PARKING PASS FOR THE HORINE SECTION. PLEASE UPDATE YOUR RSVP WITH THIS INFO IF ITS NOT INCLUDED
  • YOUR PARKING PASSES WILL BE IN THE PICKUP BIN AT THE WELCOME CENTER (plastic tube near doors on right side of the building)
  • Try to work out carpools with others. Indicate "CARPOOLING" in RSVP if you aren't driving. There is a limit to how many cars can park at Horine.
  • It will be very muddy. Bring grocery bags to put over your boots for the drive from Paul Yost to Horine section. Be prepared for a pace as low as 2 mph due to the mud.
  • Bring extra shoes to change into after the hike

*****MARATHON GROUP: *****

  • Updated the time. Meet at 6:15. We will be on the trail at 6:30 sharp. Run to catch up if you are late.
  • BRING HEADLAMP WITH NEW BATTERIES. WE WILL START AND FINISH IN THE DARK
  • The pace will be slowed to closer to 2.5-2.7 mph. Still VERY strenuous. We will keep this pace to the SG Loop. Whoever can hang with the lead group to that point will not be left behind unless they want to stop on their own.

I suggest bringing the following to make your hike easier and more comfortable:

  • Two significant meals. You need a lot of food to keep your energy up for 26 miles. You can pick up your
  • second meal at the welcome center when we arrive back there after the first 16 miles
  • At least 2 liters of water. Bring 2 more liters to refill your supply at the welcome center for the last 10 miles
  • Dry shirt to change into at the welcome center after the first 16
  • BRING A TRAIL MAP IF YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR WAY IN CASE YOU CAN'T KEEP UP. THERE WILL BE NO SWEEPER

*********10 MILE GROUP*********

The full marathon group will not see the 10 mile group due to the timing issues.
Ryan Graler and Patricia will lead the 10 mile portion

  • Updated time. Meet at 12:00 noon at the welcome center.
  • The hike will leave to go to the Paul Yost area at 12:20.
  • You will hike 5.4 miles of very hilly terrain on the Mitch McConnell Yellow Trail
  • You will then drive about a mile to the Horine section to hike the 4.5 mile Red Trail

FRIDAY NIGHT ARRIVALS:

Sharon... you are welcome to join us on the first 15 miles. We will be going a little faster than we went at Knobstone the day you joined us but based on your pace there I think you can keep up as long as the distance isn't a problem. I'd suggest doing a 10 miler somewhere and trying the 3mph pace. At the 6.2 mile mark you will have the option of taking an hour break or continuing on a 3 mile loop before we head back the Siltstone to our starting point. So, there are lots of options.

I'm definitely in for the Siltstone portions, I'll either keep up through the Scott's Gap loop or catch back up with you on the return leg to the Welcome Center. After a couple more training hikes, I hope to continue in the afternoon as well.

do we have to carry water or will there be places to filter water along the way?

Dan... you need to carry a couple of liters of water with you. We don't stop. You can refill your water at the welcome center at the 16 mile mark.

I strongly suggest that you attend the training hike this Saturday to get a feel for the pace required to make this hike in 10 hours. I hope to see you then.

I have the utmost respect for those who tackled these trails--especially given the muddy conditions. On more than one occasion I felt like I was hiking in snow. My first experience with the McConnell trail was more than enough. The 5.4 miles seemed like 15! Thanks to all the organizers!

Faith and I had a great time! The 5.4 mile Yellow Loop was a good warm up to the many hikes to come.. I have a great panoramic shot from the top of one of the hills.. Can I just upload that?

Thanks for putting this together, Tony. I also appreciate all the others that provided nagging, encouragement, humor, bandages and chocolate. It was my best hiking experience to date!

This was my best hiking experience to date (and I've been hiking for over two years). I signed up for this hike on Christmas Eve at the urging of a close friend. I thought it would be great to see how much of the course I could complete, but I had no illusions that I would be able to make the whole trip. My longest at that time was the Millenium trail, which I hiked on a recovering sprained ankle -- so it was a miserable 13 miles. The camraderie built with the group over four training hikes was surprising. I was able to "feed" off the determination of those around me when they were strong and able to occasionally push when they weren't. At each training hike, I tried to compensate for what I discovered is a bad knee for long distances. I tried prospective anti-inflammatories, a change in foot gear and ultimately a knee brace which finally worked. The training and knee preparation were important, but a team approach to hiking was what ultimately allowed me to finish.

There was a good mixture of hikers. Good to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones. We had a blast...blisters and all!

Hey everyone, sorry I didn't pass initiation. I hope you guys allow me to stay in the club. :-} Self hydration is something that I have trouble keeping up with when hiking. If Camelbak would make an IV bladder, I would be the first to buy one. I hope everyone else made it to the end. I was able to catch a lift from Glenn(first house down the street from Scott's Gap), he actually gets lost hikers about once a week that he takes back to the visitor's center.

Completed the 26.2 miles. Alot of fun. Colder than expected. And hiking with a headlamp in the morning is quite a different experience.
  • Sharon Robertson
Incredible Hike, wasn't sure I would make even the 16 miles but thenks to our awesome group I made it! I hope those tackling the entire marathon had a great last ten miles!
