Late Afternoon Horine Exploration

Jefferson Memorial Forest (map)

Selected By: John Gowin

Have you ever hiked the Jefferson Memorial Forest's Horine Reservation and wondered if there's any more than the Red, Orange and Blue trails?

Well, there is actually. (And none of it is bushwacking)

Thursday afternoon at 3 PM, meet at the Horine Reservation parking lot and I'll show you some of the "secret" trails that not everyone knows about, including the obstacle course trail, survival course trail and finishing with a sunset down at Mitchell Hill Lake on the Blue trail.

Distance, approximately 3 miles at a very leisurely pace.

Other than the Blue Trail's single down and then up, mostly flat and easy trail to enjoy a late Fall afternoon. We'll finish around dusk. Bring your cameras. If the weather is right, Mitchell Hill Lake is pretty cool at sunset.

Also, this is my first "official" hike as an organizer, so join me and let's have some fun.

Make sure to RSVP and I'll arrange for the Horine parking passes at the Welcome Center. Get directions for the Horine here:

I'll try and get several parking passes so you can just go to the Horine lot.

I'm a bit confused about parking. I looked at the map for the Horine section and there appear to be 4 parking areas. Can you give more specific directions about where to meet and park? Thanks!

When I click on Print Ticket...it shows me a map of Eastwood!?!

I will plan to get directions to Holsclaw Hill from the Welcome Center prior to 3pm, and hopefully find you all there in a parking lot. Wish me luck...and I hope to hike with you tomorrow!

Angel, the main parking lot is where we will gather at the end of Holsclaw Hill Rd. When you take a right into the Horine section, follow the road about a half mile, you'll go through a sort of S turn as you pass through the main gate. After continuing from the S, the road goes straight to a large gravel lot at the end. You can't miss it. Ignore any turnoffs and you'll find it just fine.

The gravel lot is to the left at the end of the park road. Trust me, you won't have trouble finding it. The Horine entrance is at the top of a curvy Hill and you'll see the sign on the right.

TO AVOID ANY CONFUSION, I'LL BE IN THE WELCOME CENTER PARKING LOT AT 2:30 till 2:45 so you can follow or I can jump in and we can all ride up together

If anyone can come get me, I'll go-- I'm just stuck at home, with car still in the shop.

Not too shabby for the first time out. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. A nice leisurely hike at the Horine is always a good time. Thanks to Guy for showing us the scenic overlook at the conference center.

We commemorated John's inaugural Asst Organizer hike nicely, courtesy of Peggy (right on the lake, nice timing). The vista at the end was good as it gets for Jefferson County. Thank ya'll for sharing. Nice to meet the new hikers too. Hope to see everyone again soon.

Great outing for a early afternoon, the trails were just right and seen a few birds along the way. Glad to meet eveyone I didn't already know and looking forward to seeing everyone again soon. Nice touch Peggy with the small bottles of the bubbly. Good job John
